Camping Erlebnis Zugspitze, Germany

Turned up on a beautiful sunny afternoon. I’m sure sunshine makes everything look amazing. Had we turned up in the rain I might not have been so thrilled. 

Reception is a lovely building adorned with caravan items from quite expensive BBQs to blue and pink loo and oozing with leaflets for things to do in the area. 

Greeted in perfect English we were guided through the booking in process. A tourist tax is an add on but includes a pass to use the bus into town and up to Eibsee. This ticket also includes a pass for the train from Garmisch also up to Eibsee. With the bus stop being right outside the site it was to be our obvious choice of transportation whilst on site. Directly opposite the site is an Aldi and an Edeka Supermarket, no car needed for the shopping either. The site is directly on the road from Garmisch to the Austrian border, at no point did this bother us, you are aware during the day but by night was very quiet.
Electric is metered and wifi is charged at €2 per day. Each site is fully serviced, complete with its own EHU, fresh water, grey waste and chemical disposal. We were unsure what the shute on the back of the pitch station was, site staff reassured us that it was a chemical disposal. 

The site is like a gravel car park split into two by an open barrier. Designed to be fully functional during the summer and winter for the ski-ing season. They also have a ski and boot room in the facilities block. The first part is used as an aire with coin metered EHU. These pitches are separated by logs and sparse vegetation.

Through the open barrier and you enter the campsite. A little more greenery in this section but only slightly. Pitches are big and separated by sparse hedges. Pitches are gravel and have excellent drainage when raining but very difficult to hammer home awning pegs, we now own a number of bent pegs.

To take away from the sparse, quite barren landscape with Aldi and a couple of neon signed car dealers over the road, is the fact that you are surrounded by the most beautiful snow capped mountains. Sitting at the foot of Zugspitze the views really couldn’t be better. 

There is also a small area for tents and 2 areas for seasonal pitches. 

The shower block has free, very powerful showers with an endless supply of hot water. This is a relatively big site and there are only 3 showers and 2 privacy cubicles and 4 toilets for the ladies. Plug sockets are plentiful for hair dryers and people from the tents were taking advantage of charging one or two appliances whilst in there.

There is a small but basic playground for children and a small enclosed dog walking area. 

Using the ACSI discount we paid €70.20 for 3 nights, broken down into €17 per night charge for the pitch, a tourist tax (free bus/train) charge per person, per day of €2.50 and an environmental tax per person, per day of €0.70. Metered electricity is then added accordingly. As it was warm we didn’t use the heating. Pitched close to the facilities we showered and washed up there meaning we didn’t put the water heater on either. We used electric for the fridge, lights and charging devices. Our usage was minimal. 

Would we go again? Yes! Would we recommend it? Yes! Perfect for sight seeing in the local area with no need for a car, perfect for Motorhomes. Lots to see and do all year round. Perfectly located for the ski-ing season.
