Open all year, Walnut Cottage touring site is located in Shropshire, just south of Shrewsbury and Telford, five miles from the picturesque village of Much Wenlock.
The site is best accessed (whilst towing) from the B4371 that runs along the Wenlock Edge, the final mile down quiet single track roads that have frequent passing places.
Electric gates with an intercom welcome you to the site. Once booked in you are provided with a code for the gates. The site is slightly sloping with 15 hard standing pitches, levelling ramps (two short planks of wood for us) are needed. Each pitch is different, long pitches, wide pitches, smaller pitches, perfect if you aren’t using an awning or for a Motorhome. On arrival, Wayne, the owner, will discuss your pitch preference and positioning is flexible to allow awnings on hard standing or grass. Parking for each pitch is allocated either in front of your pitch or on the small car parking area to the side of the site. Each pitch has EHU with a water tap a short walk away. There is also allocated space for tents.
Three unisex bathrooms are located around the site, each with toilet, shower and sink. These facilities are adequate and in need of updating, rather than modern/luxurious and extremely cold during our stay during November with nightly frosts. We did not see this as a problem as site prices compare favourably with Caravan Club Certified Locations that often provide no toilet facilities. We tended to use the caravan shower (for warmth) and the site toilets.
The site has a play area for smaller, supervised children.
Outdoor, sheltered washing up sinks stand adjacent to the toilet/shower blocks.
The site has a couple of quirky, retro focal points, a red telephone box and a petrol station complete with vintage motorbikes and bicycles.
Pets are welcome. There is no onsite Wi-fi, we did however have O2 phone signal and good 4G signal on our ‘Three’ sim card Mifi device. The site is not within walking distance of a bus stop. You will need to use the car to access shops and attractions. Ideally situated to visit Blists Hill and Ironbridge.
The small village of Much Wenlock is approximately 5 miles away, home of Wenlock Priory. On the high street you’ll find a local butchers, a small supermarket, book shops, pubs, a Chinese takeaway, well worth a walk around the town to take in all the different architecture. The nearest larger supermarkets are to be found a bit further afield, less than 30 minutes, in Telford, Shrewsbury or Bridgnorth.
The site enjoys splendid views of Wenlock Edge, perfect for dog walks, just a short drive away.
In November 2017 we paid £15 per night based on 2 people sharing.
